Transition to Residency (TTR)

Thank you for serving as a preceptor for the Transition to Residency (TTR) course, the last course of medical school. Below are resources outlining the program, preceptor responsibilities, and answers to common questions.

All MD Program teachers are asked to become familiar with the following resources when preparing for their teaching roles (1) Psychological Safety and (2) Learner Mistreatment.

What is Transition to Residency?

The Transition to Residency (TTR) course prepares final-year medical students for PGY1 by promoting workplace-based learning, increased clinical responsibility, and integration of prior knowledge. Selectives are two-week clinical placement blocks, during January-April, that foster independent learning, exposure to diverse healthcare settings, and readiness for residency through hands-on experience. Supervisors play a key role by offering continuous feedback, and graded assessments to support students’ transition into resident physicians.

Clinical Assessment

At the end of the Selective block, the supervisor must complete a clinical and professional behaviour (see below) assessment form on MedSIS for each learner.

Professional Behaviour Assessment

Medical students are expected to uphold professional behaviour and clinical supervisors are asked to observe, assess and support the development of professional behaviour of each learner. The following resources will help the clinical supervisor understand expectations and assessment criteria as well as provide some tools.
