Becoming the Butterfly

Join us on Thursday, April 10th, 2025, at 6:30 PM at York University for an evening of powerful storytelling, fresh perspectives, and meaningful dialogue.

"Becoming the Butterfly" is more than just a film—it’s a collaborative journey into the lived experiences of brain injury survivors. Too often, research on brain health focuses on deficits, overlooking the voices of those directly impacted. This project challenges that narrative, offering an empowering and deeply human portrayal of life after brain injury—told by those who live it. It contributes to models of feminist research which challenge damage-centered research, replacing them with a desire-based approach.

Through this innovative research-creation film, survivors became co-creators, reshaping how we understand and represent brain injury. The screening will be followed by a dynamic roundtable discussion featuring filmmakers, clinicians, and community partners, exploring themes of brain injury, collaborative filmmaking, and ethnography.
